April 15, 2021 [FUTURE FORUM] — Democracy Matters: The Future of Our Elections

Most Americans agree that it should be easy for every American to vote, and that our democracy works best when we all participate. But after record turnout in the 2020 election, a voter suppression campaign of historic proportions has emerged in state legislatures in nearly every U.S. state.

This is shaping up to be a major civil rights battle.

The national response to this wave of voter suppression is HR 1, the For the People Act, which addresses voting access, campaign finance, and other reforms like gerrymandering. If passed it would stop voter suppression in its tracks and bring a level of democracy reform that we haven’t seen since the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

In places like Maryland or Anne Arundel County, the same battle is being fought on different playing fields, like the Maryland General Assembly, local boards of elections and local legislatures.
